THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR   1861 - 1865

The causes of the Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, were complex, but the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States provoked the immediate secession of the southern slave states from the Union.  His election promise that there would be no new slave states admitted to the Union was intolerable to the Southern States, which was then named the Confederate States of America.  The war by the North was to preserve the Union, and it was not until two years later that Lincoln freed all slaves.

The war is the most costly one in U. S. history.  Almost 700,000 Americans died in the war, the majority to disease.  When the North prevailed in the war, the states that had seceded were readmitted to the Union.
